![]() Whereas Everything uses an index to find files and folders, Agent Ransack does not use an index. You can also select to match case or not, search by file size, or modified/accessed/created date. The developer doesn’t provide an explicit list on what types of files are supported for searching contents but the developer does say Office documents (Microsoft Office and OpenOffice) are supported.įor search queries, Agent Ransack allows users to run regular search queries, use Boolean expressions, or regex. While the interface can be improved upon, Agent Ransack is an excellent desktop search program that allows users to find files or folders by name, or search the contents of files. Version Reviewed: Release Build 762 – 2010.1 While Everything still works fine on Windows up to Windows 7 (I haven’t tested it on Windows 8), if there is an issue in the future it likely won’t be fixed. ![]() The other major issue with Everything is that it is no longer being actively developer - the last update was on March 13, 2009. While I’m not a big fan of searching for content inside files, I can see where some people may need that functionality… in which case Everything would not be for them (continue reading for tools that do search inside files). The biggest issue with Everything is it doesn’t search inside files. However, no program is perfect and Everything is no exception. I highly doubt you will find another program that provides speedy accuracy better than Everything. Overall, it is the combination of speed and accuracy that makes Everything the best free desktop search program. Take note that if you decide to not let Everything always stay on, whenever you run Everything it takes a few seconds (literally - it doesn’t take very long) to update its index to reflect the new files and folders added to your computer since the last time Everything was running. It doesn’t take up too many resources (roughly 15 MB with little to no CPU usage while idle, for me), but some people may not want it to continually stay on and there is a setting you can uncheck via “Options” to disable this always-on behavior. Take note that by default Everything stays on all the time in the background. In other words, Everything indexes at a rapid pace - nothing to worry about.Īside from speed, Everything is extremely accurate, typically always accurately executing your search query. If you are worried about how long the indexing takes, the developer says it takes roughly 1 second to index 20,000 files/folders while in my experience it took 5 seconds to index roughly 140,000 files/folders. However, Everything only indexes the names of your files and folders thus minimizing the time it creates to generate the index. To achieve this speed, Everything indexes your files and folders. It is literally one of the only programs that has the right to claim to be “instant”. When it comes to speed, Everything is the fastest desktop search program I have ever used.
